Last week, Opal Lawrence Historical Park in Mesquite was dedicated as a historic landmark. It is the only historical park in Mesquite registered on the National Register of Historic Places. It also has a Texas Historic Landmark designation. The Texas Department of Agriculture also named the park a centennial farm. Local historian Tom Palmer spoke in support of the dedication. Listed below are a few highlights of the park. Information can be found here.
The farmstead was built by Stephen Decatur Lawrence between 1874 and 1900 and uses a prairie vernacular design. The original structure is in almost the same condition as when it was constructed, with few modifications to the exterior. It also features several outbuildings, including a brick-laid root cellar, smokehouse, washhouse, and signature livestock barn. Other buildings are assorted chicken coops and a mule barn.
